When a parent first brings their newborn in for a chiropractic visit, there's almost always a version of the same question in the room, sometimes asked out loud and sometimes just written all over their face: Is this really safe for my baby?
We love this question. It means you're a thoughtful, careful parent who does their homework. So let us answer it thoroughly and honestly.
Yes! Infant adjustments are absolutley safe when performed by a trained provider, like Dr. Caroline.
Chiropractic care for infants is nothing like what most adults picture when they think of a chiropractic adjustment. There's no popping, forceful manipulation, or anything that would look out of place caring for a newborn. The pressure used in an infant adjustment is often compared to the gentle pressure you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato.
As a pediatric chiropractor with specialized training in infant and newborn care, Dr. Caroline has assessed and adjusted babies as young as a few hours old. Every technique she uses with an infant is specifically adapted for their age, size, and developmental stage.
Why would a newborn need chiropractic care?
This is where parents often get surprised. Birth, even a smooth and uncomplicated birth, is physically demanding, both for mom AND baby. The process of moving through the birth canal (or being delivered via C-section) can create tension or restriction in an infant's spine, neck, or cranial structure. This isn't unusual, and most of the time the body resolves it on its own. But sometimes, it doesn't — and that's when chiropractic care can make a meaningful difference.
Some of the most common reasons parents bring newborns and infants to see us include:
- Difficulty with breastfeeding or latching. Tension in the neck or jaw can make it hard for a baby to turn their head fully to both sides, or to maintain a comfortable latch. Many families see significant improvement with gentle care.
- Torticollis (head tilting or turning preference). If your baby consistently turns their head to one side, or you notice a flat spot forming on one side of their head, this is worth addressing early. Gentle adjustments and soft tissue work can help restore symmetry.
- Excessive fussiness or colic-like symptoms. When the nervous system is under stress, babies have one way to communicate it: they cry. Some families find that chiropractic care helps calm an overtaxed nervous system and leads to a noticeably happier, more settled baby.
- Sleep challenges. Related to the excessive fussiness discussed above. When a baby is more comfortable and their nervous system is better regulated, sleep often improves for the whole family.
- Tethered oral tissues (aka tongue ties and lip ties). Dr. Caroline has specific training in tethered oral tissues (TOTS) and work closely with families navigating tongue ties, lip ties, and the feeding challenges that often come with them. Chiropractic care is an important part of a comprehensive TOTS support plan.
What does an infant adjustment actually look like?
When we work with a newborn or infant, the baby is typically held by a parent or resting comfortably on a pillow in a position that feels natural to them. We assess their spine, neck, and cranial structure with gentle palpation, feeling for areas where motion is restricted or tension is present.
The adjustments themselves involve very light fingertip pressure applied to specific areas. No twisting, no thrusting, no sound. Most babies are so relaxed they fall asleep during their visit. A few get a little fussy, similar to how adults sometimes feel a release of emotion when they get adjusted, and then settle pretty quickly.
It's genuinely one of our favorite parts of what we do. There is something so special about watching a baby relax, seeing their little shoulders drop, and knowing you've helped them feel more comfortable in their little bodies in their very first weeks of life.
What about older babies and toddlers?
As babies grow, the reasons to check in with a pediatric chiropractor shift a little. Big developmental milestones (rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling to stand, first steps, etc.) all put new demands on the spine and nervous system. Falls happen constantly (it's how they learn!), and these little tumbles, while usually harmless, can sometimes leave behind tension that's worth addressing.
We adjust children of all ages here at Simply Well, and Dr. Caroline is currently working toward her CACCP (Certified by the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics) — the highest level of pediatric chiropractic certification — because we are committed to providing the kids we serve with the most thorough, evidence-informed care possible.
How do I know if my baby might benefit?
You don't have to wait for an obvious problem to bring your baby in. Many families choose to have their newborns checked shortly after birth — not because anything is wrong, but because they want to start things off well. Think of it the way you'd think about a newborn hearing screening or a newborn wellness visit: a proactive check to make sure everything is functioning as it should.
If you're noticing any of the concerns we mentioned above, or if something just feels "off" about how your baby is moving or settling, trust that instinct. You know your baby better than anyone. We'd be honored to take a look and give you an honest assessment.
