When you're trying to grow your family, you want to feel like you're doing everything you can to support your body. You're eating well, tracking your cycle, maybe working with your OB or a reproductive specialist. And somewhere along the way, someone (whether a friend, a midwife, or a late-night Google search) mentioned acupuncture.
If that brought you here, welcome! We want to answer your questions honestly and help you understand what acupuncture for fertility actually involves, what the research says, and what a first appointment at Simply Well Family Chiropractic looks like.
Why acupuncture for fertility?
Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, a system of healing that's been practiced for thousands of years. At its core, it's designed to restore balance in the body by regulating the flow of energy (called Qi) through pathways called meridians. When that flow is disrupted, it can show up in all kinds of ways: irregular cycles, hormonal imbalances, stress that feels impossible to shake, or difficulty conceiving.
In modern terms, acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body, which influences the nervous system, the endocrine system (your hormones), and blood flow. Research has shown that acupuncture may support fertility by:
- Regulating hormones involved in the menstrual cycle and ovulation
- Improving blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
- Reducing stress and cortisol levels, which can have a significant effect on reproductive health
- Supporting thyroid function and overall endocrine balance
- Improving egg quality over time with consistent care
We want to be clear: acupuncture isn't a magic fix, and we'll always be honest with you about what it can and can't do. But for many women, it becomes an important part of a holistic fertility support plan. The best part is that it can work alongside whatever other care you're already receiving.
Who is a good candidate?
The women we work with on fertility come from all kinds of places on their journey. Some are just starting to try to conceive and want to optimize their cycle health before they begin. Others have been trying for a while and are looking for additional support. Some are working with a reproductive endocrinologist or fertility clinic and want to integrate acupuncture into their existing protocol.
Acupuncture for fertility can be supportive for:
- Irregular or painful periods
- Hormonal imbalances, including PCOS or estrogen dominance
- Unexplained infertility
- IVF or IUI support (before, during, and after procedures)
- Thyroid-related fertility concerns
- Stress and anxiety that may be affecting the cycle
- Recurrent miscarriage (often approached alongside OB or midwife care)
If you're not sure whether acupuncture is right for your specific situation, we'd love to talk it through with you. We believe in meeting you where you are and helping you make the decision that feels right for your body and your goals.
What does a first appointment involve?
Before we even pick up a needle, we talk. A lot. Your first appointment at Simply Well starts with a thorough intake — we want to understand your cycle history, your overall health, what you've already tried, how you're sleeping, how you're feeling emotionally. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, all of these things are connected.
From there, we perform a thorough examination, explain what we are seeing from a TCM perspective, and outline a treatment approach that makes sense for you. Then we'll move into the acupuncture treatment itself.
What does acupuncture actually feel like?
The needles used in acupuncture are incredibly thin, much finer than a typical medical needle. Most people feel little to no discomfort when they're placed. What you may notice is a mild heaviness, warmth, or tingling sensation at certain points. This is normal and is often described as the Qi (energy) responding. Once the needles are in place, you'll rest comfortably for 15-20 minutes. Most people find acupuncture deeply relaxing, some even fall asleep!
How many sessions will I need?
Acupuncture for fertility is most effective as a course of care rather than a one-time treatment. For general hormone balancing, we typically recommend starting with weekly sessions for 8–12 weeks to allow your body time to respond and regulate. We reassess as we go, adjusting based on what's shifting in your cycle and how you're feeling.
If you're working toward a specific procedure like IVF, timing matters, and we'll work with your reproductive team's calendar to support you at the most beneficial points in your protocol.
Can acupuncture and chiropractic work together?
They absolutely can! At Simply Well, that's one of the things we love most about the holistic care we are able to offer. Your nervous system plays a significant role in hormonal health, and chiropractic adjustments that support optimal nervous system communication can complement acupuncture beautifully. Many of our patients choose to incorporate both into their wellness plan, and we can coordinate that care seamlessly under one roof.
